Combined National Night Out Brings Out the Neighborhood #2015Memories

Approximately 1,000 neighbors from OST/South Union gathered at Peck Elementary School for National

Night Out to take a united stand against neighborhood crime and to celebrate the continuing efforts of

our Great Opportunity (GO) Neighborhood to transform Southeast Houston into a healthy, vibrant, safe

and economically stable community.

The event was a “Family Reunion” that united OST/South Union’s neighborhoods at one location. The

event was hosted by the HISD Police Department, Peck Elementary School, OST/South Union GO

Neighborhood and its steering committee, the Southeast Houston Transformation Alliance (SEHTA).

Several other sponsors gave generously of their resources to the event, including OST/South Union’s

civic clubs, City Council member Dwight Boykins, Bill’s Ice House, Kacal’s Automotive, METRO, Ray’s

Barbecue, and Frenchy’s Chicken.

Participants enjoyed a wide range of foods, refreshments, activities, as well as performances from

Hartsfield Elementary School cheerleaders and the Jeff Davis High School Mariachi Band. In addition,

local candidates, representatives from area businesses, neighborhood civic clubs, and Great Opportunity

(GO) Teams were on hand to meet with and engage neighbors about the work they are doing to help

revitalize OST/South Union.

According to OST/South Union Go Neighborhoods Community Coordinator Gwen Fedrick, “This event

would not have been such a huge success for OST/South Union if it weren’t for our partnerships with

State Farm, our corporate sponsor; Mrs. Carlotta Brown, principal of Peck Elementary; and the HISD

Police Department. They provided the resources, volunteers, and facilities that enabled us to engage so

many of our neighbors at one time.”
